I'm Over Quotas: How I Buy Grail Watches Pre-Owned Online

I'm over quotas. So here's how I hunt grail watches pre-owned on the internet instead.

Proof it works: in 2021 I bought my Patek Philippe Gondolo on eBay. It was a gift to myself for committing full-time to Ellingwood Advisory after years of corporate trudging.

And this week, with no waitlist: a solid-gold Piaget Polo for $8,495 on The RealReal, and a 1982 gold Vacheron Constantin 222 for $49,995 on eBay.

Why I'm over watch quotas

A lot of boutiques won't just sell you the watch you want. You buy the pieces they need to move, build a "purchase history", and wait to be offered the one you came in for. It's ridiculous, and I'm over it.

When I took my Patek Gondolo in to be serviced, Patek very quickly offered me a $60K stainless steel watch I really did not want. That same watch can be found online for $20–30K, so maybe I'm not an ideal customer, but it felt like a Patek that would never hold value.

The watches I actually want are already out there: pre-owned, online, waiting for whoever has a saved search. And they're not the obvious ones. Everyone names Rolex, Patek and AP. Collectors' "holy trinity" is actually Patek, AP and Vacheron Constantin, and Vacheron is the one nobody talks about.

The three watches I'm hunting right now

1. Vacheron Constantin 222 (34mm mid-size)

The unexpected one, and the one I'm truly lusting after. The 222 launched in 1977, thinner and quieter than the Royal Oak or the Nautilus. The 34mm mid-size is the one I want most.

2. Piaget Polo (34mm, all gold)

I also love Piaget. The Polo arrived in 1979, all gold, and vintage ones sell for a fraction of the new Polo 79. This one stopped me on The RealReal this week.

3. Patek Philippe Calatrava 6000

A Calatrava 6000 in white gold with a black dial and fabric strap. If I bought another Patek pre-owned, after my Gondolo, it'd be this.

How to buy a pre-owned luxury watch online: 6 steps

  1. Search the reference number, not the name. 46003, 4200H, 7131. Listing titles are messy; reference numbers aren't.
  2. Save the search. Save it on eBay and favorite pieces on The RealReal, so new listings come to you. The good ones go fast.
  3. Check both sites before you buy. A gold Piaget Polo ran from $5,499 to $69,995 across the two this week.
  4. Read the details. Case size, movement (plenty of Polos are quartz) and what's included.
  5. Vet the seller. On eBay: feedback, return policy, and the Authenticity Guarantee badge if the listing has one. On The RealReal: the condition notes.
  6. Ask for what's missing. Service history, extra links, close-up photos. A good seller answers.

FAQ

Is it safe to buy a luxury watch on eBay?

It can be, if you vet the seller and the listing. Check feedback and the return policy, ask for the reference number and service history, and look for eBay's Authenticity Guarantee badge on eligible listings. My Gondolo came from eBay.

What is a watch quota?

It's the unofficial rule at some boutiques that you build a purchase history, often by buying watches you didn't come in for, before you're offered the model you actually want.

Is the Vacheron Constantin 222 worth it?

To me, yes. It's the most elegant integrated-bracelet watch of its era, and it's far less hyped than the Royal Oak or the Nautilus. Pre-owned, the vintage 34mm mid-size is the one I'm hunting.

Pre-owned feels riskier than a boutique. Done right, it's a saved search and a few good questions. No quota required.
